SOFI Fellows Exchange Program

SOFI will provide funding for researchers (graduate students, postdoctoral associates, staff scientists and engineers, and PIs) to carry out collaborative projects in another institution’s lab(s).  These guest researchers will be designated a “Solar Fuels Institute Fellows.”  Through exchanges of from 2 to 12 week duration, SOFI aims to break down the silos in solar fuels research and build a multidisciplinary network, while addressing specific project needs of the labs.   Only modest funds for material direct costs will be dispensed, as it is SOFI’s goal to leverage existing investments in research and infrastructure.  The SOFI Fellows Program will lower many of the barriers to carrying out collaborative projects across geographically distributed teams.

Starting in Year 2, exchanges/projects with budgets below a predetermined threshold will have the ability to be directly approved by two TWG leaders plus a member of the SOFI Management team (Executive Director and Managing Directors).

SOFI Translational Prize

The SOFI Translational Prize will bring early-career scientists and engineers, designated as "SOFI Investigators," into existing labs for prototyping and translational R&D.  The Prizes, awarded by the Executive Committee at their discretion to teams of researchers pursuing particularly promising technologies, will offer attractive and industry-competitive remuneration packages.  They are intended to:

  • Maximize investment by leveraging existing equipment and infrastructure
  • Decrease potential IP costs
  • Mitigate risks of “public” failure
  • Empower Inventing Members with more strategic options
  • Provide easier access to clients and experts
